HP Pavillion dv5-1050ee Review

HP Pavilion dv5 series has been on a roll lately with a huge variety of models available for the end user. Aimed at entertainment users, dv5 notebooks packs power with good looks. Similarly, the HP Pavilion dv5-1050ee is aimed at users looking for their entertainment fix on the go. By no means a slouch in terms of specifications, it packs some serious horsepower. The dv5-1050ee is equipped with an AMD Turion X2 processor at 2.2 Ghz ,which is adequate for gaming, HD videos as well as video editing. To support the processor, it ships with 3 GB of RAM, which is a good amount to handle Vista Home Premium it ships with. Bumping up the RAM to 4 GB would make it suitable for a 64 bit OS. The 15.4” LCD has a standard 1280 x 800 pixel resolution so you can fully enjoy HD content ad 720p. If 720p is less for you, you can use the Blu-Ray ROM and the HDMI output port to view content on an external Full HD TV.The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 GPU can handles any games under the level of Crysis very decently at the LCD’s native resolution. Although, for some games you might have to lower the resolution to get a good performance/quality ratio. The 5400rpm HDD will also provide slow load times for some games, but that’s a sacrifice you have to make to get more battery life. A 7200rpm HDD can solve this issue but it’ll really effect the battery life. With a 320 GB HDD, you wont easily run out of space either, whether you install lots of games or store HD content. The connectivity options include WIFI, Ethernet, dialup modem and Bluetooth. The build in web cam provides a good quality image which makes for some good video conferences. A memory card reader takes care of your extra storage needs as well as cellular and camera data cards. For those wishing to edit video on this notebook, it even has a Firewire port. And for security purposes, a finger print scanner is thrown in for good measure. The keyboard is spacious and a joy to type on with very responsive keys. The track pad is sufficiently spacious as well which means you wont have to swipe multiple times. The color of the keyboard and track pad matches the rest of the silver color scheme of the notebook. The notebook itself has a black and silver color scheme which is pleasant on the eyes, although it doesn’t have an imprint finish on the back of the LCD as most HP notebooks do.It ships with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. The software bundled includes the usual trial applications and antivirus, which are better off removed from the system as they just hamper the performance with extra bloat.Priced at around $1,120, this notebook is great value for money. It doesn’t fall short on any feature, and at the same time wont rob you off your money. A great all round performer, the HP Pavilion dv5 is a recommended buy if you’re looking for a powerful entertainment notebook.
