Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition

I still remember a newspaper clipping my father used to show me when I was seven years old and it was the year 1990. The clipping shows a NASA egghead standing before a massive thing and the text reads: “… at NASA, we have extreme super computers that run at massive 2GHz!” At that time, a 2GHz was unbelievable and would normally make us wonder just what are we supposed to do with this computing power? How time flies and how it changed our very ways of thinking. Right now, our PCs and consoles, when idle, are helping in DNA research!

In the ever-revolutionizing world of processors, one name always comes to mind: Intel. The other key player is AMD. Currently, the latest offerings from AMD are competing with Intel’s Core 2 architecture based processors. Intel, after the massive success of Core 2, went ahead and has introduced Core i7 architecture. Currently king of the ring, the Core i7 has the most sophisticated and extremely powerful processors for Home and Business users.

Within the Core i7 series are four variables to choose from: Core i7-920, Core i7-940, Core i7-965 Extreme Edition, and last but far from least: Core i7-975 Extreme Edition. The clock speeds starts at 2.66GHz and all the way up to 3.3GHz. The Core i7-975, which we are looking at today, has its clock stabled at 3.33GHz and with Intel Turbo Boost, clock speeds at 3.45GHz (all cores) and 3.6GHz (single core).

Below are the five different Core i7 processors currently available. Please note that the entry-level Core i7-920 is alone very capable of outperforming the mammoth Core 2 QX9770!

The Core i7 Extreme 975 runs at 3.33GHz, which is a 133MHz faster than its 965 Extreme. Apart from the 133MHz increment, the Core i7-975 offers the D0 stepping in response to Core i7-965 C0. The Core i7-975 offers lower power consumption and provides greater overclocking headroom. The quad-core Bloomfield processor, Core i7-975, uses 1 MB of L2 cache and 8 MB of L3 shared cache memory. The TDP for this processor is be 130W (TDP = maximum peak wattage).

Architecture of Core i7: Nehalem

The new Intel Core i7 (Bloomfield) processors have the following deeper features:

  • Four processing cores
  • Support for SMT (simultaneous multi-threading), allowing up to 8 threads to be processed simultaneously
  • 32 KB instruction + 32 KB data L1 cache per core
  • 256 KB L2 cache per core
  • Large 8 MB L3 cache shared by all 4 cores
  • An integrated memory controller (IMC) supporting three channels of DDR3 memory
    • Memory clock speeds of up to 1333 MHz
    • Memory bandwidth of up to 32 GB/s
    • Up to six memory sockets
  • The new Intel Quick Path Interconnect (QPI) replaces the front side bus (FSB)
  • Addition of seven new SSE4 instructions
  • Monolithic processor design (all four cores on a single die)
  • Fabricated using Intel’s 45nm high-k process technology

Like the Core 2, the Core i7 has the 45nm fabrication. The Core i7 has a 731 million transistors count. Nehalem processors will default at 64KB of L1 cache and 256KB of L2 cache. L3 cache of 8MB for quad-cores is shared among the four cores.

Some of the key micro architecture design features.

One of the most beneficial features for Intel is the modularity of the architecture, where they can change the design of their processor, by adding more cores, removing cores, even adding an intergraded GPU in the future.

In the Core 2 processors, there were higher latencies in inter-core communications. This was because there were two dies with two cores linked together. The Core i7 processor series have its cores joined in a single die! This is called Monolithic die. This speeds up operations with multiple program threads as the time required for moving data between cores is greatly reduced.

Another innovation that eliminates latencies found in previous series is the feature of an on-die, triple channel, DDR3 memory controller that support three channels of DDR3 memory per socket, with up to the three DIMMs per channel. The Core i7 is capable of pushing more bandwidth with much reduced latencies.

Sony VAIO VGN-Z12GN

The Sony VAIO series has always been well known for its sleek designs and high prices. But at those prices, it always offers something more than its competitors. Sony VAIO VGN-Z12GN is no expectation. With a frame built of carbon fiber, the same one used in cars like McLaren F1, it weighs very light and is very strong and durable at the same time. It’s also built using a single sheet of aluminum just like the Macbooks, which gives it a very smooth look.

With a matte black body and silver cylindrical hinge, this notebook is sure to turn heads around. Not only just the VAIO borrow the unibody feature of the Macbooks, the keyboard seems to be inspired by them as well. The keys are further apart then what you would find on any other PC notebook, which could make it a bit difficult for first time users to adjust to.

The screen measures 13.3” with a high resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels. Perfect for multitasking and toolbar heavy software like Visual Studio and Photoshop. The display is very vibrant and gives out great colors which make watching movies a pleasure on this notebook. 720p HD content specially brings out the true value of this display. A VGA front side camera is mounted on top of the display for video conferences and the occasional self photo shoots.

VGN-Z12GN comes equipped with a hardware slider switch for Stamina or Speed settings, which let you choose between maximum battery time and maximum performance. This switch also changes between the dedicated 9300M GS graphics card and the built in Intel GMA 4500MHD with the former for higher performance and the latter for higher battery time. Known as the Dynamic Hybrid Graphics System, this provides up to an hour of extra battery time when used at the Stamina setting.

In the processor department, it comes with an Intel Core2 Duo P8600 clocked at 2.40 GHz with 3MB of cache and 1066 MHz memory bus. It’s also one of the few notebooks in the market that have DDR3 memory, which is 2 GB in its case.

The integrated 4500MHD does a fair job of running videos, presentations and even Windows AERO, but when you need higher performance for gaming or video and graphics editing, the 9300M GS is the way to go. A Direct X 10 compatible graphics card, it’ll really provide a boost to your frame rate and plays most games available nowadays with ease. Coupled with the fast processor and even faster RAM, this can be a deadly gaming machine to have for those LAN parties.

Since this notebook is geared towards business users, it ships with Windows Vista Business with Service Pack 1, which can be a bit of a disappointment if you’re not a business user as the business version of Vista lacks Windows Media Center. As for business users, it provides security features like fingerprint scanner and a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) Chip, which works with Windows to protect your sensitive data.

To wrap up this screaming fast package, it contains a DVD Drive with writing capabilities, although at its price point, you’d expect to have a Blu-ray drive in it which is a bit of a disappointment. The network connections include Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, i.LINK connector which works with Sony cameras, a dial up modem and 802.11n WIFI. Other connections include 2 USB ports ( which is less than expected, probably inspired by the Macbook again ), HDMI connector ( although no Blu-ray drive ), Memory stick slot, SD card slot, analogue display output, headphone, microphone, a PC card slot and an Express Card slot.

With all these features, this notebook weighs in at just 1.48 kg (with battery) thanks to the carbon fiber body. The bundled battery gives up to 5.5 hours of time on Stamina mode and 4.5 hours on Speed mode.

Overall, this is one of the best performing and fully equipped notebooks you’ll find on the market today with the exception of a missing Blu-ray drive, although which can be added later. But that’ll just add more to the high price tag of around $2500. If you have that much to spend on a notebook and a Macbook Pro isn’t your cup of tea, this is a highly recommended notebook whether you are a business user, gamer or just want our entertainment fix on the go. Sony VAIO VGN-Z12GN won’t disappoint.

HP Pavillion dv5-1050ee Review

HP Pavilion dv5 series has been on a roll lately with a huge variety of models available for the end user. Aimed at entertainment users, dv5 notebooks packs power with good looks. Similarly, the HP Pavilion dv5-1050ee is aimed at users looking for their entertainment fix on the go. By no means a slouch in terms of specifications, it packs some serious horsepower. The dv5-1050ee is equipped with an AMD Turion X2 processor at 2.2 Ghz ,which is adequate for gaming, HD videos as well as video editing. To support the processor, it ships with 3 GB of RAM, which is a good amount to handle Vista Home Premium it ships with. Bumping up the RAM to 4 GB would make it suitable for a 64 bit OS. The 15.4” LCD has a standard 1280 x 800 pixel resolution so you can fully enjoy HD content ad 720p. If 720p is less for you, you can use the Blu-Ray ROM and the HDMI output port to view content on an external Full HD TV.The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 GPU can handles any games under the level of Crysis very decently at the LCD’s native resolution. Although, for some games you might have to lower the resolution to get a good performance/quality ratio. The 5400rpm HDD will also provide slow load times for some games, but that’s a sacrifice you have to make to get more battery life. A 7200rpm HDD can solve this issue but it’ll really effect the battery life. With a 320 GB HDD, you wont easily run out of space either, whether you install lots of games or store HD content. The connectivity options include WIFI, Ethernet, dialup modem and Bluetooth. The build in web cam provides a good quality image which makes for some good video conferences. A memory card reader takes care of your extra storage needs as well as cellular and camera data cards. For those wishing to edit video on this notebook, it even has a Firewire port. And for security purposes, a finger print scanner is thrown in for good measure. The keyboard is spacious and a joy to type on with very responsive keys. The track pad is sufficiently spacious as well which means you wont have to swipe multiple times. The color of the keyboard and track pad matches the rest of the silver color scheme of the notebook. The notebook itself has a black and silver color scheme which is pleasant on the eyes, although it doesn’t have an imprint finish on the back of the LCD as most HP notebooks do.It ships with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. The software bundled includes the usual trial applications and antivirus, which are better off removed from the system as they just hamper the performance with extra bloat.Priced at around $1,120, this notebook is great value for money. It doesn’t fall short on any feature, and at the same time wont rob you off your money. A great all round performer, the HP Pavilion dv5 is a recommended buy if you’re looking for a powerful entertainment notebook.

Asus Essentio CM5570-AP002

Product summary
The good: HDMI port and Wi-Fi uncommon in midtowers in this price range; slight performance edge due to more recent integrated graphics chip.
The bad: Seemingly nonexistent online support.
The bottom line: The Asus Essentio CM5570-AP002 isn't an overly remarkable desktop, but it has a few extra features that help it stand out. Its Wi-Fi and HDMI video out port give it some unique capabilities, and the best part is that Asus still manages to keep the price down. It's hard not to like this system, even though we wish Asus had more comprehensive support.

Dell Inspiron 537s

Product summary
The good: Extra expansion card slots; room for two hard drives.
The bad: Behind-the-times features; slow performance; too many better, faster systems available for just a few more dollars.
The bottom line: You might find a better deal from Dell if you configure an Inspiron 537s online, but this retail only model has little to recommend it. From slow performance to a weak feature-set, this budget slimtower is outclassed by too many other retail desktops.

HP Pavilion Slimline s5120y

Product summary

The good: Friendly-looking new design.
The bad: Less upgrade room than competition despite its larger size; too-spare connectivity options; lackluster performance.
The bottom line: As much as we've appreciated HP's efforts in bringing the slim tower to the mainstream, we cannot recommend this off-the-shelf Pavilion Slimline s5120y. Even considering its low price, its design, features, and performance all come up short next to its retail competition.
